December Floral Influences & Inspiration

Floral Influences & Inspiration

Welcome December!

As the year draws to a close we hope you’ve enjoyed our focus on flowers and their influences on jewelry. It’s been a wonderful year. We had the pleasure of introducing Attilio to you and continuing to be part of so many of your life events.

As with many of our months, December also has two flowers Narcissus and Holly.

We hope you have as much fun with this as our previous newsletters and learn some interesting facts along the way!

Thank you for taking this journey with me. I would also like to wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and a New Year filled with joy for you and your family.

Narcissus and Holly

Narcissus symbolizes rebirth, hope and new beginnings indicating a fresh start and optimism that the year-end brings.

Narcissus is also referred to as paperwhites. They are recognized by their trumpet-like centers. The small, delicate white flowers produce a pleasant fragrance. They are native to the Iberian Peninsula in the Mediterranean region. The flowers bloom in late winter and early spring.

Holly protection, happiness and goodwill. It was a symbol of fertility and eternal life for the Druids. It is now associated with Christmas by Christians and symbolizes the holiday season’s festive spirit and joy.

This plant has glossy, deep green, leathery, spiky leaves and bright red berries. The spiky leaves prevent animals from nibbling at it. The plant develops small white flowers in May. The wood of a holly tree is mainly used as firewood. The original Yule log burnt at Christmastime was Holly.

Did You Know

Narcissus

Narcissus
In Greek mythology…Narcissus is sometimes called the god of vanity because he fell in love with himself after seeing his reflection in a pool.

When his self-love weakened him and caused him to die, the nymphs came to bury him and transformed his body into a beautiful white daffodil which became known as Narcissus

Holly

Holly
Holly berries are toxic to humans and pets if eaten. Although the leaves are not poisonous, they can cause side effects if ingested.

On a brighter note…Holly was highly prized by the ancient Romans for its beauty and symbolism.

Legend has it…if you plant a holly tree next to your house, it will protect you from witchcraft and lightning strikes.

Fun Facts

Narcissus Daffodils and jonquils are part of the narcissus family. They bloom in the spring, while paperwhites bloom in winter.

Fun Facts

Holly is dioecious which means that the individual plants produce male or female flowers. Female plants produce bright red berries. These are used to decorate Christmas wreaths and to brighten up the winter months.
