Welcome to September where “Autumn is golden”

Welcome to September where “Autumn is golden”

TAs Summer turns to fall let us not be sad at the end of a season but rejoice at the beginning of a new one. Although we say goodbye to the long Summer days we welcome everything that Autumn has to offer us!

We are awakened by the scents of cinnamon and spice. Nature is an explosion of warm earth tones of orange, browns and greens. This inspiration is where our life in color journey continues this month.

In the world of gems in this color range, we have citrines, topazes, tourmalines and orange sapphires.

Thank you for taking this journey with me, I hope you are enjoying it. Happy September

Gina

Autumnal Colors

Citrine – Did you know that the majority of citrines start their lives as amethysts, but are heat treated to turn yellowish, golden or yellowish brown? They are valued for their warm, earthy colors and vibrant sparkle.

Topaz -Although topaz comes in several colors, for autumn let me introduce you to “Imperial Topaz” – a deep yellow color, verging on orange, tinged with gold.

Tourmaline – more specifically “Chrome Tourmaline” which is a deep, solidly green chromium-containing gem.

Sapphire – Orange Sapphire’s cause of color is traces of iron within the gemstone.

Interesting Facts

Romans used citrine in the art of Intaglio engraving. It is also believed to help the heart, kidney, digestive tract, liver and muscles. It is said that it promotes creativity, helps personal clarity and eliminates self-destructive tendencies.

In the Middle Ages topaz was thought to strengthen the mind and prevent mental disorders as well as sudden death. In the 11th century it was suggested as a remedy for bad vision. The prescription called for immersing the gem in wine for three days and three nights, followed by the application of the gemstone to the afflicted eye.

n 1876, a young gemologist, George Kunz, walked confidently into the director’s office at Tiffany & Co, unfolded a gem paper and placed what he called a “drop of green light” on thee desk. It was a sparkling, faceted green tourmaline from Maine, and Tiffany immediately bought it! George Kunz ended up having an illustrious career at Tiffany as a gem expert of his day.

In english orange as a name for a color only emerged in the 16th century, before that english speakers used the term giolureade or yellow red. It is said that an orange sapphire empowers creativity and energy, is a symbol of vitality and enhances fertility.
